I didn’t come to landlord compliance software from behind a desk. I came to it from under a boiler.
For more than ten years I’ve worked in the rental sector as a gas engineer — looking after landlords, letting agents, Airbnb hosts and corporate lets across every corner of the gas industry. I’ve serviced, certified and repaired gas appliances in hundreds of rental homes, and in that time I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly: brilliant landlords who genuinely care, and the poor workmanship, difficult tenancies and unresponsive letting agents that unfairly give good landlords a bad name.

A decade in the trade — and the classroom
My grounding is practical and professional. I spent years looking after large-scale domestic housing contracts for local councils, keeping thousands of homes gas safe and compliant, before moving into the private rental sector. I’m registered as an Engineering Technician (EngTech) with the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) — a professional registration, awarded through the Engineering Council, that recognises proven competence and a commitment to doing gas work properly and safely. In an industry where cutting corners can cost lives, that standard matters to me.
Alongside the tools, I’ve never stopped learning. I’m currently working towards a doctorate at Glasgow Caledonian University, applying academic research and rigour to the very real, everyday problems I see on the ground in the rental sector. It’s a slightly unusual combination — a gas engineer with a research mindset — but it’s shaped everything about how JRM Compliance is built: practical enough for a busy landlord, rigorous enough to actually solve the problem.

When I moved into the private sector, I chose to focus on the gas side of the rental market and steadily built a portfolio of landlords to look after. Someone for a bit of handyman work?” They trusted me, so they wanted my recommendations for every other trade too. That told me something important — good landlords are crying out for a network of contractors they can actually rely on.
The real problem isn’t the work. It’s the communication.
Here’s the pattern I saw again and again: a landlord would call me, stressed, about a problem — only for me to discover it had been raised with their letting agent weeks earlier and never passed on. The work wasn’t the issue. The communication was. A missed message, a job that slipped through the cracks, an update that never reached the landlord — and suddenly the tenant is unhappy, the landlord is exposed, and everyone’s blaming everyone else.
After years of watching good people let down by bad communication, I became convinced that the single biggest problem in the trades and the rental sector isn’t dodgy workmanship or difficult tenants. It’s human error in communication — landlords, agents, contractors and tenants all accidentally dropping the ball because there’s no single, shared place to keep track.
